A concept map with digital literacy in the center and eight arms branching from it

What is the Digital Literacy Challenge?

The concept of digital literacy is complex and many different definitions exist. According to the B.C. Post-Secondary Digital Literacy Framework (p. 3), “Digital literacy is a person’s knowledge, skills, and abilities for using digital tools ethically, effectively, and within a variety of contexts in order to access, interpret, and evaluate information, as well as to create, construct new knowledge, and communicate with others.”

The intention of this challenge series from the Learning Technology & Innovation team at TRU is to distill the topic of digital literacy into smaller pieces corresponding to each of the eight competencies in the B.C. Post-Secondary Digital Literacy Framework:

  • Challenge One: Ethical and Legal Considerations
  • Challenge Two: Technology Supports
  • Challenge Three: Information Literacy
  • Challenge Four: Digital Scholarship
  • Challenge Five: Communication and Collaboration
  • Challenge Six: Creation and Curation
  • Challenge Seven: Digital Wellbeing
  • Challenge Eight: Community-Based Learning

What emails can I expect?

The following emails will notify you when new challenges are released. However, the challenge series is designed to be completed asynchronously at any time this summer (May 20, 2025-August 29, 2025).

  • Challenge One: Ethical and Legal Considerations
  • Challenge Two: Technology Supports
  • Challenge Three: Information Literacy
  • Challenge Four: Digital Scholarship
  • Challenge Five: Communication and Collaboration
  • Challenge Six: Creation and Curation
  • Challenge Seven: Digital Wellbeing
  • Challenge Eight: Community-Based Learning

How do the challenges work?

For each of the eight challenges, you can expect to:

  • Learn what each competency means and why it’s important
  • Engage in 1-2 short learning activities
  • Practice what is being learned
  • Explore an example classroom scenario where the competency is applied
  • Explore next steps to put the competency into practice
  • Share your key takeaway from each challenge

If you share your key takeaway as part of each challenge, you will be emailed a Certificate of Participation at the end of the summer (or earlier!).
